Series production of the new Mercedes-Benz GLB begins at the Kecskemét plant

  • The new GLB is already the second fully electric model to roll off the production line at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Kecskemét
  • Both the EQ technology GLB and the state-of-the-art 48V hybrid version will be produced on the same production line, using flexible manufacturing processes
  • The use of digitalization and artificial intelligence enables greater efficiency and flexibility
Series production of the new electric GLB has started at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Kecskemét. The Hungarian site operates as part of a flexible European MMA production network in close cooperation with the Rastatt plant in southern Germany. Following the EQB, the new EQ technology GLB is already the second fully electric entry model to be produced in Kecskemét, and later this year it will be joined by the GLB equipped with a modern 48V hybrid internal combustion engine. Both the fully electric and the high-tech hybrid variants of the model will be manufactured on the same production line, supported by flexible production planning.

As part of Mercedes-Benz’s business plan, the company has invested around one billion euros in the Kecskemét site since 2022. The plant, which opened in 2012, currently employs nearly 4,500 people. Part of the investment has been used to increase the flexibility of existing production lines and to implement comprehensive digitalization. In addition to state-of-the-art manufacturing technologies, artificial intelligence and increased automation play a key role. The design and optimization of the new production lines were carried out using highly precise digital simulation techniques, resulting in significant savings in both construction time and costs. Furthermore, series production of the new GLB now also uses the Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS), which enables continuous vehicle software updates via the Mercedes Intelligent Cloud.

With these developments, the Kecskemét plant is taking production to the next level. Thanks to AI applications integrated into the Mercedes-Benz MO360 digital production ecosystem, as well as the successful introduction of MB.OS, the plant operates with outstanding efficiency within Mercedes-Benz’s global production network. Virtual commissioning once again made it possible to reconfigure the production halls quickly and smoothly, without having to interrupt ongoing production for an extended period.
